The Glee Project: Episode 9

by Gina Scarpa

This week's theme on The Glee Project is Generosity and the homework assignment is "Lean On Me". Given the theme, it's not the week to act like a diva or try to upstage people. Robert Ulrich is joined by Kevin McHale (Artie) to judge the song. It's hard to believe that Lindsay or Alex actually enjoy being backup singers for most of the song but they slap a smile on their faces and do a convincing job.

Kevin though that Sam wasn't connecting, felt everything Alex sang, and likes Damian's performance. Lindsay racks up her first win; Kevin tells her that her voice was amazing and loved that she smiled the whole time.

When Kevin announces that the song for the video shoot is "Sing" by My Chemical Romance, it's clear that not everyone is familiar with it. Making things tougher, they'll all have to pretend to play instruments in the video, with the exception of Samuel, who actually does play. Oh man, Damian trying to play the drums is super awkward and Alex happily strums the bass. Rough.

Nikki brings in some students from schools in need of help and pairs them up with each of the contestants for the shoot. Damian's thankful for his partner because the little 11-year-old plays the drums so he gets a quick lesson in. Alex's partner doesn't want to talk at all, Samuel's partner seems to be on the same page as him, and Lindsay's is like a miniature version of her.

At the video shoot, Zach felt like Lindsay was starting to forget the basics. Damian's eyebrows continue to plague him as the mentors felt he looked more like he was in pain than having fun. Alex doesn't seem too comfortable working with kids, and Samuel doesn't convincingly play his keyboard.

Ryan Murphy brings on Ian Brennan, the show's co-creator, to watch all four perform so that they can try to figure out which contestant they can write a part for. Lindsay is assigned "Defying Gravity" from the Broadway show Wicked, Alex is given the gospel song "His Eye Is On The Stone", Damian is asked to sing the swing song "I Gotta Be Me", and gives Samuel the classic "My Funny Valentine". Robert and Zach won't be in the room to help fight for them so the pressure's on!

Ian didn't find Samuel to be as authentic as the other three and seemed particularly intrigued by Alex, but said he couldn't imagine cutting any of them.  After talking it over with Ryan, they decide that they're NOT going to cut any of them.  None of them will be going home this week.  Now that's generosity!  Get it?
