Food Network Star Season 7

by Allison L. Nowacki and Bryan J. Polk

After having celebrated the Fourth of July on last week's Food Network Star, it is now time to tackle another summer favorite - food trucks. The contestants meet with Tyler Florence (supposed food truck master) where he let them know that they would be split up into three teams of three for a food truck face off. Each team will need to come up with a food truck concept and then shoot a thirty second commercial to entice 150 guests to eat at their truck. Not only did the advertisement serve as this week's Camera Challenge, but it was the only deciding factor the guests had in choosing which one team's food they would be eating.

The teams were matched up by random draw, which couldn't have been scripted out any better, as it left frequent combatants Penny and Mary Beth on the same team. The two of them ended up also being paired up with the over the top frat boy Chris. They all agree on a theme of wraps for their truck called Wrap it Up. Vic, Jyll and Orchid wind up on another team and their concept is fusion food for their truck Fierce Food Fusion. Finally there was Jeff, Susie and Whitney who use the concept of food shaped in ball form for their truck Balls on the Roll. Tyler was unsure of the whole "ball angle" but didn't try to talk them out of it. Most food trucks, at least in Los Angeles, have a humorous twist to their name and food so we are unsure why Tyler was so turned off by their concept. With the concepts nailed down, the food trucks named and the commercials taped it was time for the contestants to head out to shop with their $1,000 for food and supplies for the competition.

On the day of the food truck face off, it was time to roll the footage of the commercials for the 150 hungry food truck fans and the judges. While Bobby laughed out loud during the Fierce Food Fusion ad, hardly anyone was laughing during the Balls on the Roll ad except for a few nervous titters. Where is your funny bone LA? There are several food trucks with the same concept and low brow name roaming the streets of Los Angeles as you read this! Most of the guests choose to go to Wrap It Up or Fierce Food Fusion. Tumbleweeds could be seen at Balls On The Roll as not many people outside of the judges made an attempt to eat there. Each truck had some great dishes and at least one miss. There also seems to be at least one contestant on each team that is taking a back seat personality-wise. It is difficult to shine with so many big personalities.

At judging is where all the real drama happens. The judges talk to Wrap It Up and tell Penny that her filet mignon wrap was by far the best dish on the team. Chris and Mary Beth really fell short in the taste department. It all falls apart when Chris mentions how Penny wasn't ready when the guests first arrived and many of them had to wait for Penny's wrap to be completed. Mary Beth also points out that she had to help Penny cut onions for her dish. Penny, feeling attacked, lashes out. I was not quite clear on her argument or if it was valid but she did make cat noises towards Mary Beth before Giada shut the whole argument down proclaiming that Food Network is a family and Penny needs to start getting along with everyone if she wants to continue on in this competition. On team F.F.F, Vic is complimented on his Philly cheese steak burrito and inviting personality. Jyll also hit a home run with her shrimp po'boy taco but Orchid really fell flat with not only her interaction with customers and judges but her Filipino adobo taco also left a lot to be desired.

Finally, on team Balls On A Roll, Jeff gets called out for his blue humor but did really produce a great meatball sandwich. Susie had a wonderful albondigas but the judges feared that she didn't sell her dish enough as not many American's may know that albondigas is a Mexican meatball soup. Whitney made a falafel that didn't have the right texture and was the least favorite dish on the team. There isn't a single team that is safe this episode. The judges will pick the top person from each team and out of those contestants will pick a winner. Vic, Susie, and Penny were in the top three with Vic leaving victorious. Safe this week were Jeff, Jyll, and Chris, which leaves Mary Beth, Orchid, and Whitney up for possible elimination. After much deliberation, the judges decide that Orchid will be going home. We were rather shocked by this as we felt Whitney was for sure marked for departure. Orchid was the front-runner early on but while around such large personalities started to fade away as the competition progressed. Her cooking overall was solid but she just didn't have the lasting appeal of a Food Network Star.
