America's Next Top Model Cycle 16

by Mike Bandy

Now that we're down to four girls on Top Model, each girl pretty much gets an equal amount of camera time. We heard from each of them at the start - Molly was happy to get best photo and believes she'll be in the final two, Brittani feels she's pushing herself really hard, Alexandria didn't like being in the bottom two again, and Hannah knows that she can win this competition.

Miss Jay arrived with the girl's portfolios and said that they had an important client to see, which turned out to be Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Italian Vogue. They all sat down to tea, and Franca looked at each girl's portfolio and gave them advice on the industry. Hannah worried about being memorable, Molly didn't speak much, Brittani asked lots of questions, and Alexandria poured tea.

After that, Miss Jay had someone for the girls to meet, and it was a woman named Noor, who was a professional tea tray dancer. The girls got to practice dancing with a tea tray on their heads, and Brittani kept dropping hers. The girls were then told that they'd have to perform the dance that night for an audience. When the girls arrived back that night, they were told that they'd be dancing with professional dancers, and that they'd also have to carry lit candles on their heads. Most of the girls were nervous about this one.

The performance began, and Molly was up first. She tripped on her skirt and dropped her tray (thank goodness the candles were attached to it!), and she did not regain her composure. Brittani was next, and she didn't drop the tray once. Hannah also didn't drop her tray, but she did do some sort of hula dance that Miss Jay said was so three cycles ago. Alexandria was last, and she did a good job until she got too confident and dropped her tray.

At the end of the challenge, Alexandria was chosen as the runner up, and Brittani won. She chose Hannah to share in the prize - a one-on-one walking teach with Miss Jay, which both girls attended the next day. Hannah was grateful for the tips and hoped to improve her walk, which needs some work.

The girls then walked around an outdoor market and decided to try goat brains, which didn't sit too well with Brittani. In fact, she said it messed up her whole digestive system, and she felt really sick that night. She was worried about the photo shoot the next day (the Tyra Mail said, "Ah, the sweet smell of Soukces"), and how well she'd pull it together.

The photo shoot was continuing from last week; This time they were in the Medina, which is one of the largest outdoor markets in Marrakech, and they were posing as women who were on a fashion journey. The photographer was Friedemann Hauss. Hannah was first, and she couldn't seem to pull it together very well. Molly was next, and Mr. Jay and the photographer loved her poses and her face, and there was also a HUGE crowd of people watching (which Molly loved). Alexandria was next, and when she was asked to give up control, she lost her face completely. Brittani was the final girl to go, and she pulled off lots of great poses and facial expressions, and had to do it in the rain on top of it. The photographer and Mr. Jay really loved what she did.

Panel this week featured guest judge Daniella Issa Helyael, the designer of the clothing for the shoot. Alex's photo didn't look high fashion to the judges, and Andre thought it looked as though she'd lost her mind. Brittani's shot was well praised by everyone, except for the fact that she lost her left arm with her pose. Hannah's shot was editorial in the body, but her face didn't show its angles. Molly's shot was true high fashion, and she was praised for knowing how to sell the clothes without it looking catalog.

After a pretty predictable deliberation, here's how the call-outs went:
1. Molly
2. Brittani

Hannah and Alexandria, please step forward. Alexandria has too much control in herself, while Hannah lacks control. In a surprising turn (to me, anyway), Hannah remained in the competition and Alexandria was eliminated.

Alex said that she loves this industry and maybe that's why she tried to control so much. She felt that this was the best lesson she's ever had, and she can't wait to use all the experience she's gained from the competition.
