Dancing With The Stars Season 12

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, the couples had to take on classical music and styles on Dancing With The Stars. There's a 46 piece orchestra accompanying them which definitely raises the level of this performance episode. The styles proved to be challenging but in the end, most delivered.

Couple: Romeo and Chelsie Hightower
Style: Paso Doble
Scores: 7 +8 + 8 = 23
I wasn't sure, initially, how I'd feel about classical music but once the first dance gets underway, I find myself really enjoying it. It feels more like authentic ballroom. Romeo and Chelsie have a great chemistry and the dance definitely had intensity, which that style needs. Now, he needs to work on really refining his technique in order to raise his game.

Couple: Kendra Wilkinson and Louis Van Amstel
Style: Viennese Waltz
Scores: 6 + 6 + 6 = 18
Following Kendra's sexy and successful rumba last week, I had high hopes for this performance. Unfortunately, she was unable to deliver two weeks in a row. Kendra seemed stiff and to be thinking more about the steps than her performance. However, one of the positives is that she knew it wasn't her best and sometimes, being aware of your shortcomings can be the best thing to help you improve.

Couple: Sugar Ray Leonard and Anna Trebunskaya
Style: Waltz
Scores: 7 + 7 + 7 = 21
Going from boxing to waltzing could not possibly be more different or challenging and Sugar Ray has his work cut out for him. In his rehearsal footage, he says he's just hoping for a score better than 20. He needs to work on his technique and I could've done without that silly faces but his charisma continues to carry him through this competition. He should be happy - it's his best score yet and it's higher than a 20!

Couple: Petra Nemcova and Dmitry Chaplin
Style: Paso Doble
Scores: 8 + 7 + 8 = 23
Petra's biggest challenge for the Paso Doble is nailing that aggressively sexy character that she needs to inhabit. The performance itself was a little clunky in spots but Petra worked hard at learning the style and getting down the performance that she needed in order to be successful. She exceeded the judges' expectations, which should make her quite happy.

Couple: Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff
Style: Waltz
Scores: 8 + 8 + 9 = 25
Ralph started the competition strong but his rumba last week just didn't do it for the judges. If they felt that he didn't have a connection with Karina last week, he made them think again this week. They told a beautiful story, had a great connection, and found their way back to being a leader in this competition. I'd say that's a success!

Couple: Hines Ward and Kym Johnson
Style: Paso Doble
Scores: 9 + 8 + 8 = 25
Hines struggles with figuring out the timing with a song that has no lyrics and on top of it, Kym adds in difficult moves to raise their game. It turns out that Hines responds well to a challenge! His game was most definitely raised and he had the scores to show it. He needs to be a little lighter on his feet but I have a feeling that as the weeks go on, we're going to continue to see that technique get better and better...

Couple: Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas
Style: Viennese Waltz
Scores: 9 + 8 + 9 = 26
When the season first started, I thought Chelsea and Mark had fantastic chemistry - perhaps both on and off the dance floor. Turns out she has a boyfriend and he's been spotted with recent Idol eliminee, Pia Toscano. Still, that chemistry ON the floor works for them week after week. Take a well executed dance and pair it with the Harry Potter theme in me and the dance lover and nerd in me is totally satisfied. Len didn't feel the same because he hates anything that's not traditional but Bruno calling him Voldemort made it all better!

Couple: Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke
Style: Paso Doble
Scores: 8 + 7 + 8 = 23
Chris showed off his softer side last week but this time, the wrestler in him came back out for his Paso Doble. It started strong but didn't build as the music built. It was sort of one note but that being said, the dance was pretty good. You would expect that someone as strong and tough as Chris Jericho would nail that style.

Couple: Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Style: Waltz
Scores: 7 + 7 + 8 = 22
Kirstie will have to battle through a pretty painful hip injury in order to nail this waltz. It definitely raises the pressure on both of them, since last week, an injury brought Maksim to the ground mid-performance. This week, she lost her shoe and Carrie Ann deemed her the "Queen of Mishap". Kirstie didn't seem as into her dance as she usually is but she could be thrown off by everything that has happened. Still, as Bruno said, she did amazingly well... considering.

Don't miss the live elimination on Dancing With The Stars, tonight at 9/8c on ABC.
