America's Next Top Model Cycle 16

by Mike Bandy

Last night's cycle 16 premiere of ANTM began with Tyra's promo of the different girls who try out for the show, which was leaked out on the internet, so we've all pretty much seen it already. It came with a twist - this cycle, we'd be skipping casting week entirely and getting right down to business! Tyra decided that she would make the final 14 girls believe that they didn't make it into the house, because they had to understand that the modeling world is all about rejection.

We did get to see a little bit of casting week, such as the girls being critiqued on their runway walks on an airport runway. There were a few girls who stood out, like androgynous Sara, gorgeous Monique, and Kasia, this cycle's plus size model who's already got experience - she's been in V Magazine.

Cut to the girls hanging out on a rooftop, and the Jays come out and give everyone an envelope. The girls were told that if they had a photo in the envelope, they'd make it into the house. Our final 14 without photos were mostly crushed by not being picked - there were tears galore from everyone except Alexandria, who didn't seem to be fazed by it at all. The girls were taken to get their bags, and Tyra came to say "goodbye" to them...except we were already in the model house! The girls were shocked to learn that they were actually going to be a part of the show.

Shortly after this, the girls got a Tyra Mail that said, "Let's get the ball rolling, shall we? Love, Tyra", and the next day, they were whisked off to a mansion in Malibu. Once there, they met Erin Wasson, a famous supermodel and designer, and were told that they'd be walking in their first runway show, featuring Alexander Wang's designs, on a 12 inch wide runway over water, inside a huge plastic bubble. They'd also be doing a photo shoot backstage, where they'd be shot by Russell James. Then Miss Jay walked out in a huge plastic bubble...Also, the girls had to do a photoshoot backstage before they go out onto the runway, and they'd be shot by Russell James.

The photo shoot went about as expected, though there were a few real standouts, such as Mikaela, who has face for days, and Dalya, who had a great profile shot. The runway show began and most of the girls were passable. Some notable blunders were Ondrei and Monique, who both fell inside their bubbles and were not able to recover very gracefully. The star of the show was Brittani, whose walk was excellent and really impressed Erin Wasson. After the show, she gave each of the girls a piece of jewelry from her line.
Back at the house, Alexandria was already rubbing girls the wrong way, and was trying to teach Jaclyn how to walk. She's had prior experience, working in fashion weeks in LA and NY.

Next it was time for panel, with guest judge Erin Wasson! Some girls who did really well at the shoot were Molly, who had wind in her hair and great bone structure, Mikaela, whose jawline and eyebrows made her look as though she was already on the cover of Italian Vogue, and Brittani, who pulled off a great shot while getting her makeup done. There were a few slipups - most notably Nicole, whose film Tyra said made her look fifteen years older than she is, and Angelia, who had mysterious eyes in her shot, but did not look like a model.

During deliberation, the judges loved Brittani, Mikaela, and Molly, and were not so sure about Nicole, Dominique (mostly based on her performance in the fashion show), or Angelia. Time for the call-outs! Here's how they went:

1. Molly
2. Brittani
3. Alexandria
4. Mikaela
5. Dalya
6. Hannah
7. Ondrei
8. Monique
9. Nicole
10. Kasia
11. Jaclyn
12. Sara

Would Angelia and Dominique please step forward?

The judges told Angelia that they felt no emotional connection to her photo, and although Dominique is very striking and unique, her photo didn't capture her soul. In the end, Angelia was eliminated. She was shocked to be going home, because she knows her stuff, and she felt that didn't get a chance to prove herself. She said that she'd make it on her own.
