Survivor: Redemption Island

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, Survivor unveiled its latest season but this time, there's a twist. When players are voted out of the game, instead of going home, they're first sent to Redemption Island. There, they'll live alone and battle the elements until another player that was voted out shows up. The two will square off in a winner-takes-all battle where the victor stays to play again and the loser gets a plane ticket back to the states. The player who makes it through Redemption Island will eventually re-enter the game, wonderfully complicating everyone's strategy more than they realized.

The two tribes, Ometepe and Zapatera arrive via helicopter on a beach in Nicaragua to find out from Probst that two more players will be joining them - none other than Boston Rob (swoon!) and Russell (sigh...). On Ometepe's mat, Francesca's immediate reaction was to blurt out that they're both troublemakers and didn't feel they were there to help her. Way to draw attention to yourself. The infamous players draw buffs and Rob heads to Ometepe and Russell heads to Zapatera, much to Stephanie's delight. She feels her only shot to get to the finals is to team up with Mr. Hidden Immunity Idol himself.

At Ometepe, Rob quietly assumes the leadership role to build a shelter, given his massive experience in the game and the construction business back home. Phillip, who claims to be a former federal agent, overpowers Rob's directions by barking out orders to everyone around him. Meanwhile, Kristina starts looking for a clue for the idol and is caught by Rob. Target.

Over at Zapatera, Russell does what Russell does best. He pulls in a young girl, who is worried about beating voted off because she's weak, and promises to take her to the end. One of Russell's strong points isn't subtlety and a few of the guys pick up on his early alliance. They know they need to vote him out as soon as possible or he'll be running this entire game. Target.

At the challenge, the tribes find out they're playing for both immunity and reward (flint for fire). In order to win, they had to push extremely heavy blocks down a track, run up a flight of stairs, chop away at some rope, run up another flight of stairs, and complete a puzzle. Zapatera gets off to a great start and has a commanding lead going into the puzzle, due to their brawn. Ometepe is made up a ton of little girls who are not going to be very useful in physical challenge involving strength going forward. However, they manage to catch up and get very close to winning, thanks to Rob's ridiculous puzzle skills. Zapatera takes the first win home though and, lucky for Russell, nobody is heading to Redemption Island quite yet.

Back at Ometepe, Kristina has managed to find the idol without so much as a single clue. Survivor really needs to think twice about putting these in the game going forward if people can just run around their beach and dig one up. She decides to share this information with Francesca and Phillip. Kristina wants to blindside Rob at tribal council. Really? The first day? I can understand the threat that he brings to the table but there's no denying that the man can lead a tribe in challenges and is pretty damn helpful around camp. There will be other opportunities to take him out.

Tribal council ends up being one of the best in the show's 22 seasons - and it's only the first episode! Phillip goes haywire, revealing that Francesca and Kristina were planning to blindside Rob and that Kristina has the idol. Well, Kristina, one of your many mistakes in the first three days was trusting a guy who can't even pronounce the name "Francesca". Rob, who had already figured out the Three Stooges' plan earlier, and his alliance pretend to be shocked by the revelation and then makes Kristina an offer: Give him the idol in order to secure her safety in the game.  She turns him down.  Well, have fun playing this game by yourself, lady.

Votes are thrown towards Kristina, who boldly hangs on to the idol, Phillip, and Francesca. In the end, it's Fransequa (or whatever Phillip was calling her), the outspoken attorney, who ends up heading to Redemption Island.

Note to amateurs: You don't need to make big moves Day 1.  What you need to do is be part of the majority.

Oh yeah, and for all you fans of the host (guilty), check out Probst's new website, jeffprobst.com!
