Restaurant: Impossible

"Rascal's BBQ and Crab House"

Last night, on Restaurant: Impossible, Robert traveled to New Castle, DE to visit Rascal's BBQ and Crab House. Owner Steve Kledaras is in deep trouble - the restaurant is a complete mess and losing money fast! The minute Robert walks in the door, he's grossed out by the dirt inside and the smell coming from... well, somewhere. More on that later.

After an unsuccessful tasting of some of the restaurant's most popular dishes, Robert heads to the kitchen for an inspection. There, he finds dead flies, mouse droppings, mold, and bacteria so bad that he practically throws up. It's hard to believe that this really is a restaurant that's in business but it is! It was so awful that everyone has to wear productive gear in order to continue cleaning.

Time for a plan. The first priority is cleaning up Rascal's. Next, fix the menu, market the restaurant, and make sure Steve follows through when it comes to management.

Tanya, Robert's design assistant, steps in to do her part with the décor but because they're on a limited budget, they go dumpster diving out back to find some things that they can work with. After getting over the initial shock of uncovering hundreds of dollars worth of disgusting moldy steaks, they grab a few treasures that they may just be able to use.

Next, it's time for a crab cake cooking lesson from Robert. Tanya finishes up Day 1 by saving Rascal's and Robert a ton of money with her creative design ideas for furniture and a faux wall to hide a service area.

Things were looking up... until Day 2. A professional cleaning uncovered 13 dead mice in the kitchen! Call the exterminator! Besides the mice situation, Robert faces a challenge training Tanya and Erin, the servers. One's attitude is worse than the other's! After butting heads for quite some time, he finally gets through to them and drives home the importance of delivering excellent customer service to every table.

The décor comes together, the menu has been improved, the staff has been trained, and the place is packed with hungry guests.  It looks absolutely amazing in there... certainly nothing like it did just a day and a half earlier.  The first seating went a little shaky but by the time the second one rolled around, Rascal's really got into a groove.  The diners were loving it and I think it's safe to say they'll be back for more.

It seemed like Rascal's would end up a success story - but on a recent visit, Restaurant: Impossible saw that the place was closed and the junk had piled back up.  Did they learn anything from their time with Robert?!
