Tabatha's Salon Takeover Season 3

by Mike Bandy

Last night, Tabatha took over West End Salon in Provincetown, MA. They've been in business for 28 years, and the salon is owned by Dougie, a 57 year old man who is deep in debt and wanting to retire. He works 100 hours a week trying to keep the salon afloat. The salon has a stripper pole, the staff are all inappropriate with the clients, and their busiest season only lasts 16 weeks.

Tabatha meets Dougie, and he says he's 6 months behind on the first mortgage of the salon, and 7 months behind on his home

mortgage. He's neglected his friends and family for years, not to mention his boyfriend of 30 years, because of being in the salon so much. He doesn't feel the staff can back him up. The salon has no rules.

The undercover cameras showed Dougie out on the street handing out flyers, and the stripper pole in the salon, where customers have the opportunity to dance for dollars off of their bill. Tabatha thought that all of it was tacky, and got really upset when one of the stylists, Robbie, made a comment that a customer didn't pay for a spray tan because she was from New Jersey. Tabatha's salon is in New Jersey.

The inspection showed that the salon was very dirty, and the front desk was completely disorganized, and at the waxing station, it was determined that they double dip.

The next day at the staff meeting, Tabatha asked for the staff's perspective on how the salon is run. The staff said that Dougie tells the staff to get people in quickly, and that quality is sacrificed for quantity. The shtick that goes on is very tacky and the staff doesn't think it's professional, but Tabatha reminded them that they're also responsible for their own behavior.

Tabatha brought in a lesbian bridal party for the stylists to work on, and most of the staff did work that Tabatha called "dated" and "80s", with the exception of Sasha, who was probably the best stylist there. Meanwhile, Tabatha took to the streets and promoted the salon just as Dougie does, and he could see that it looked ridiculous.

Tabatha told Dougie that the salon is all shtick and no substance. She told him that he drives clients away and it's embarrassing to the staff at times. He saw that she had a point. He needs to be able to trust his staff and spend his time in a more effective way.

The next day, Tabatha took the staff to a local restaurant for a team building lunch. She brought in a group of actors to give everyone there a really bad experience; so that they could see what bad service is really like. Meanwhile, the staff discussed what was wrong in the salon, most notably that Robbie is favored over other stylists, and Dougie feels badly about that.

Tabatha told Dougie to step away from the salon, he made John the manager for the day, and the staff was supposed to take over.

Meanwhile, Tabatha took Dougie to a different part of the restaurant, where his boyfriend was waiting, and she told them to write love letters to each other. These were later used in a marriage ceremony between the two, which was a surprise to everyone!

Later, Tabatha took the staff to the beach for a bonfire. She had them write down bad behavior that they didn't want to see in the salon ever again, and then they had to read it aloud, and then throw it into the fire. It was a powerful experience for all of them.

Three days later, the staff came back for the renovation to find that the salon was perfectly clean, the stripper pole was removed, and they had a new computer system for booking clients.

New clients came in, and most of the stylists did a great job in working with them. The final recommendations for the salon were for Dougie to trust the staff to run the place so he can take a day off, that John should become the manager when Dougie is not there, and that Robbie needs to be willing to learn, and needs to get more education.

When Tabatha came back six weeks later, she saw Dougie still had the same shtick, and Sasha had left the salon a month before. John wasn't managing. Robbie said that Tabatha rocked his world, and he's changed for the better. Dougie said that nothing had really changed a lot in the salon, but business had picked up. Tabatha said that it's a mixed bag at the salon; she hopes that they can make the changes needed to save the business.
