NaOnka Mixon and Kelly Shinn from Survivor: Nicaragua

by Gina Scarpa

Last night on Survivor: Nicaragua, there was no need for an individual immunity challenge because two players made the decision to remove themselves from the game. Both NaOnka and Purple Kelly decided the harsh weather was too much for them and felt getting warm and eating a good meal was more important than competing for a million dollars. Today, we caught up with the two in an exclusive interview about why they wanted to be on Survivor, how they felt about their portrayals, and if they regret their decision to quit.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your main reason for wanting to try out for Survivor?
A. Kelly: I think this really is the opportunity of a lifetime. You are never just gonna go out into the middle of Nicaragua and starve yourself and go through what we went through. The experience is what drove me to do it really. I just think that being able to be a part of it is such a wonderful experience.
A. NaOnka: I wanted to see if I could win a million dollars! I wanted to see if I can play this crazy ass game. It was more like a life test for me to see if I could do it. I knew it would test my character and strength. This game definitely reveals your character all the way to the core.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How did you feel about the La Flor tribe early on in comparison to Espada? Were you happy?
A. NaOnka: Oh yeah definitely!
A. Kelly: How could we not be happy? We were winning every challenge. For the most part, we had a solid alliance and we were getting along. I think La Flor worked really well together. We were an amazing tribe. I think it's safe to say we would all say that. We went into every challenge and dominated.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You both had interesting edits this season. NaOnka, you were portrayed as the villain and Kelly, we hardly saw you at all. What has been your reaction to watching the episodes?
A. NaOnka: I'll go first. I thought that it was funny. I knew I did some crazy things but I didn't realize I said some crazy things while doing the crazy things. That's what's funny to me. I knew the drama but I didn't know it was all like that. I think I played a hell of a game. I think it was funny to watch and it would've been awesome to see this crazy girl to see this girl win. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. My mom's crazy, too.
A. Kelly: Nobody even knows I'm on Survivor. They don't know me. It's like I'm the invisible girl. That sucks. I went through everything that everybody else went through. That's the worst part really. I did everything that these people did. I was starving, I was soaking wet, I didn't sleep. It really bothered me how it was shown. When they did show me, they picked the most blonde comments they could. In reality, I'm very intelligent. I have lots to say and I was involved in the decisions that were made. It was very frustrating. I still can't figure it out. I think I brought more to the table than what they showed.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: The weather seemed brutal this season in Nicaragua. What was the worst part about battling the elements?
A. Kelly: I'm gonna say the worst part was not having any clothes. I had a skimpy little dress. There are people in boots, jeans, flannels, they have a hat. Alina had a scarf. Those things are crucial. You might not realize it but when you're out in Survivor, having one piece of clothing is miserable. If the weather was sunny, yeah, put me in a little dress. Really, the hardest part was being freezing cold with no way to get warm.
A. NaOnka: The hardest part is getting your mind to think that you can go through this and psyching yourself out. You say you can do this but you're freezing and wet and you try to say, "I'm dry, I'm dry" but you're wet as hell. There's nothing you can do about it. You can't ask the person you're competing against to use their jacket or socks. It's survival of the fittest. If you're fully clothed then God bless you. Only people who have played this game will understand what we've been through. In Nicaragua, it would be beautiful and then it would be ugly.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Everyone from Holly to Jane to Jeff Probst trying to get you to stay in the game. Did anyone say anything that came close to swaying you?
A. NaOnka: A million dollars sounds great. It sounds like a lot of fun but I was at the end of my game. I think I had fight left but I wasn't really willing to fight anymore.
A. Kelly: I appreciate that everyone tried to help us. It came down to my physical health and that to me was more important than the million. I was so physically ill that my mind was set and I was okay with that. I appreciate everything that Holly said to me before tribal. I listened to her. I think she's a great mom and I appreciated it. I had to put myself first.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: So the big question is - do you stand by your decision to quit?
A. Kelly: I definitely stand by my decision. I stand by every decision that I made on Survivor.
A. NaOnka: I stand by mine as well. I think I played a hell of a game. Whether I went out then or two days later, I went out further than I thought I would. I'm blessed to have had the opportunity. I don't regret anything. I played a hell of a game and I'm memorable.
