The America's Next Top Model Cycle 15 Finale

by Sandhurst Miggins

Last night was the much anticipated finale of the 15th season of America's Next Top Model and yours truly was one of a select few who got the privilege to watch with the final two in the private viewing room of the CW building in Burbank, CA. I must admit the atmosphere was a bit dull before the two young ladies walked into the room but when they got there, I could see that some people were now trying to restrain their inner groupie from lashing out. Okay, maybe I was trying to contain my inner groupie but I digress. Both ladies seemed slightly shy on entering the room and quickly took their seats as the finale began.

Now, I am not going to give a blow by blow account of the episode since RealityWanted writer Mike Bandy has been doing such a great job at that. However, I will tell you about the reactions that we got from the girls.

I will admit that, for most of the episode, I thought Chelsea was going to win. Between the way the episode was edited and especially the look on Ann's face as the verdict was about to be delivered, all signs pointed to a Chels win. Ann looked like she was about to relive a painful moment of what could have been and it was just too much to bare. I was actually pleasantly surprised when Tyra said her name but to anyone watching the show, the girl won this cycle after week 4.

Chelsea Runner Up from America's Next Top Model Cycle 15

Don't get me wrong. Chelsea did a great job and to be honest had this not been the Italian Vogue Cycle, she probably would have won based on the tried and true ANTM formula about the girl who dreamt about this the most winning the title. However, this was the high fashion season and as a former reality show model who went into the real world of fashion modeling, I will be the first to tell you that there is a major difference.

Personality seems to be what most ANTM decisions are based and this season the argument about whether Ann's personality was strong enough really had no place in the real world of modeling. You have 2 seconds ladies and gentlemen to impress a client with your book and that's it. Those sit down interviews that you see never occur unless you have made it through to the top ranks of modeling but as a newbie, it's all about your book - no talking required. Ann photographs extremely well and has that cool, awkward vibe going. Talk to any working high fashion model and that's the vibe you'll get, even Chanel Iman has a slightly introverted manner about her. So again I think the right girl and the best girl won this cycle.

It was fun interviewing Ann. She was completely herself, in that shy way, but you could tell that she accepted it, which I really liked. She had obviously been through a lot on the show and she came to understand herself more and realized that what she thought were her weaknesses were actually her strengths. My heart went out to Chelsea though, as I was interviewing her. Trust me, as the 1st runner up having a microphone shoved in your face right after you lost is not the way you want to spend that moment, and you can tell that having finally seen what the judges actually said about her adds a little bit more to the moment, but she handled it with grace, discussing her favorite moments on the show and the wisdom and advice she got from Tyra.

Being there to relive the moment with the girls was an honor and having the chance to interview them was even better. Check out the video footage of my interviews with both Ann and Chelsea.
