The Amazing Race 17

by Sandhurst Miggins

The teams continued their tour of St Petersburg, Russia tonight as Jill and Thomas were the first to leave the pit stop to join the circus. When they arrive at the big tent they find it closed and must wait for it to open, thus allowing four other teams to catch up to them.

Teams must now choose between two tasks in the Detour challenge, Circus Band or Circus Clown. In Circus Band the teams must choose an accordion player to teach them a song on the accordion and must then play it back to receive their next clue. In Circus Clown, the teams must master the art of plate spinning and must spin ten plates on ten sticks at the same time. Most of the teams choose to do the plate spinning except for Mallory and Gary and Nat and Kat. Depending on their more scientific side Nat and Kat write numbers on their hands to remember the musical patterns.

Jill and Thomas who were the first to arrive at the detour, decide to change tasks halfway through the plate spinning for what they assume to be the easier musical task. As they are now choosing their accordion teacher, Brook and Claire are the first ones to master the plates and are the first to receive their clue. Teams must now embark on a journey to solve a Russian mystery.

Nat and Kat's scientific method pays off in the end making them the second team to leave the detour followed, surprisingly by Nick and Vicki teams must locate the clue box and then walk to a historical tower in the city. Once there one team member must climb to the top and search for the next clue. The catch is that teams must read the instructions carefully, "WALK" being the key word. No taxi is allowed to help. The other catch is that the clue at the top of the tower is not a building but a figurine of the building that they must find. In this case it a figure of the famous Church of Spilled Blood.

Nick and Nat are the first to climb the tower. Though they're confused for a good bit of time about what they are actually looking for Nick spots the figure and quickly comes up with a plan to lie to everyone else that they are looking for some other location. I think this was a failed attempt to stir things up this season because lets face it, these teams are all really nice to one another. Too nice if you ask me. It's a million dollars!

Michael and Kevin don't pay attention to the clue and are led to the tower by a taxi driver. When they find the figurine they again take the taxi to the church. The Hosts Brook and Claire decide to follow Michael and Kevin by taking a taxi to the church but after rereading the clue they realize their mistake and head back to the tower to do the challenge on foot.

At the Road Block, teams must play a Russian form of bowling where one must throw a stick at wooden cylindrical pins, trying to knock over three different formations. It's another task that looks easier than it is and it just make me a little happier that I didn't make it onto this season of the amazing race. Nat and Kat seem to be cruising through this leg of the race with Kat making quick worth of the formations. They become the first team once again to reach the Pit Stop for this leg.

Though Michael and Kevin were one of the first teams to arrive at the pit stop. Michael is having a hard time with the challenge forcing Kevin to panic. Brook and Claire are the next to finish the Block followed by Nick and Vicki. Back at the tower Chad and Steph become the third team to break the rules by taking a cab to the church but unlike Brooke and Claire they don't realize their mistake. When they arrive at the final Road Block they find themselves in a race with Michael and Kevin to the pit stop for the final spot.

Father and son team of Michael and Kevin actually arrive before Chad and Steph but because they used a cab twice they incurred two, 30 minute penalties where as Chad and steph only received one, 30 minute penalty, allowing them to continue on to the next leg.
