So You Think You Can Dance Season 7

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, So You Think You Can Dance, tried out their new format, pairing season 7 contestants with all stars from previous seasons. In some cases, it came together beautifully (a la Alex and Allison) and in other cases, it fell a bit flat (i.e. Melinda and Pasha). There was something always interesting and exciting about a new group of dancers being paired up with one another and trying out new styles. Ina sense, we lose a little bit of that with the all stars but we also get to see some of our favorites back doing what we love to see them do best. It's definitely an interesting choice for the show but one that, so far, seems to be working.

Things get started with a routine by the Top 11 to "Acapella" by Kelis, choreographed by newcomer Tessandra Chavez.

Cat reveals that Tabitha and Napoleon have choreographed a routine that anyone can learn! In fact, Cat herself is going to learn and perform it next week... supposedly. For fans who want to learn it, check out the video on the Dizzy Feet Foundation website or the So You Think You Can Dance Facebook page.

The first four dancers are called out onto the stage to find out the voting results. They are: Alex, Robert, Lauren, and Kent. They're all SAFE!

The next four dancers on the stage are: Melinda, Billy, Ashley, and Alexie. Billy and Ashley escape unscathed and will definitely dance another week, while Melinda and Alexie are both sent to the bottom 3 and will have to dance their solos later on.

The last three dancers to find out their fate are: Jose, Adechike, and Cristina.  Surprisingly, it's Cristina that ends up in the bottom three, not Adechike, who got his butt handed to him by the judges last night for his lack of performance or chemistry with all star Kathryn McCormick.

Straight from the Tony Awards this past Sunday, the cast of I'll Fly Away performs on the So You Think You Can Dance stage.

The bottom three perform their solos, with Melinda up first.  She taps, of course, to James Brown's "I Got The Feelin'".  There's no denying her tap ability but like, last season, tap often just doesn't translate on So You Think You Can Dance.  Alexie is up next, dancing to "I've Been Loving You Too Long" by Otis Redding.  It was still kind of cute and the judges want more from her.  As I watch, I'm worried that they'll get rid of her, instead of cutting the only tapper or ballroom dancer from the competition.  Cristina takes the stage last, dancing to Celia Cruz and Tito Puente's "La Guarachera".  She brings everything she's got... all the fire, all the passion, all the technique, all the performance.  She's not goin' anywhere.

While the judges debate, Usher performs his latest smash hit "OMG" and then introduces the world premiere of Justin Bieber's new video, "Somebody To Love", which features none other than Usher himself.

So it all comes down to Melinda, Alexie, and Cristina.  It's quite clear that the fans are smitten with the boys this season, isn't it?  The judges are unanimous in their decision and they've decided that the person going home is... Alexie.

Be sure to tune in when the Top 10 take the stage on So You Think You Can Dance, next Wednesday at 8/7c on Fox.
