American Idol Season 9

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight's episode of American Idol is an interesting one. Yes, it's Idol Gives Back, where celebrities come together in order to raise money to help people all over the world but it's also an elimination episode and someone from the Top 7 will be headed home. It's weird to go from helping fight malaria in Africa to combating hunger right here in our own country to listening to a sympathetic crowd "awwww" over an eliminated singer. It's tough to feel bad for whoever heads home tonight. We have bigger things to focus on.

Queen Latifah is hosting in Pasadena while Ryan Seacrest holds things down in L.A. Jennifer Garner and Victoria Beckham first deliver a special message on behalf of Save The Children, helping fight poverty and promoting literacy in America's youth.. Russell Brand and Jonah Hill provide some comic relief with a skit about a phone bank containing not a single celebrity.

The Black Eyed Peas give an energetic performance from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, singing "Rock That Body". Interesting choice but okay.

A video is shown of Ryan's trip to Kenya, where he traveled to see the effects of malaria firsthand. In nearby Uganda, a young, pregnant woman loses her battle to the disease and her husband is forced to bury them both, long before he even wanted to say goodbye.

George Lopez takes to the stage to judge the judges. It's a bit that starts off funny but Lopez quickly begins stammering through his jokes, some of which make no sense at all.

Time for some results. Ryan brings Crystal and Casey to the center of the stage, then tells Crystal that she is safe. He does the same with Aaron and Lee and this time, it's Lee who is headed back to the couches. Does anyone else find the interactions between the Idols interesting? Crystal gave Casey a hug when he found out he was in the bottom three, but Lee ignored Aaron completely.

In Pasadena, Jeff Beck and Joss Stone perform an extremely weird rendition of "I Put A Spell On You".

Morgan Freeman is on hand to ask for donations and a video is shown of his trip to his home state of Mississippi, along with Randy Jackson, to see how Save The Children is helping kids in the impoverished area of Mound Bayou. Alicia Keys performs her song, "I'm Ready" and "Empire State Of Mind (Part II)", sounding quite tired but you can't take anything away from the effort she puts out every time she gets on stage.

Russell Brand and Jonah Hill are back, with some celebrity impersonators and D-List celebs (including Slash and the OctoMom) manning the phones. Jim Carrey shows up, takes one look around, and runs for the hills. Well played.

Carrie Underwood gives a classy performance of her song "Change", from her latest album Play On. If you didn't know any better, you would've thought that it was written just for Idol Gives Back. A video is shown of Ellen's trip to Pasadena, along with friend David Arquette, to visit a food bank and take a closer look at the hunger issues facing working people right here in America.

Ryan brings Siobhan, Mike, and Tim to the center of the stage. Siobhan is immediately sent back to safety and then Mike finds out he's beaten the Idol Save Curse and heads to the couches. (Note: The curse refers to last season's Matt Giraud, who only lasted two more weeks after the judges saved him.) That leaves long lost Partridge Family member Tim in the bottom three along with Casey and Aaron.

Former Idol winner David Cook shows a video of a trip to Ethiopia, followed by performances from Annie Lennox and Mary J. Blige with an all star band - including Randy Jackson on guitar!

Then... wait a minute. Why is my television giving me options to save and erase? Because American Idol is the worst at timing out live episodes! My DVR isn't smart enough to know that for the thousandth time over the years, Idol has yet again run over.

Googling...

Simon Cowell shows his trip to Arizona, Ben Affleck asks for donations, and Sir Elton John performs from Pasadena.

In the end, it's Tim Urban who is headed home. No more goofy smiles, crazy dance moves, and dare I say, solid acoustic performances. I have to say, the kid grew on me. I'd be more upset about it but it's pretty trivial if you compare to all of the footage we saw tonight of people around the world who need our help.

Be sure to tune in when the Top 6 take the stage on American Idol, Tuesday night at 8/7c on Fox.
