The Real World: DC

by Matt Anaya

Things got a little awkward this week on The Real World: DC, as Erika has finally had enough with the dramatic Real World lifestyle and threatened to leave, then changed her mind twice, before being somewhat forced out of the house by her roommates.

As the season has gone on, Erika has threatened, multiple times, to leave the house because she is "tired of how things are." Whatever that means. She has never been very specific about what has been bothering her and the roommates have started ignoring her wolf cries. But this time, Erika is serious and has her boyfriend Ian, who is in town, to lean on.

Ian and a few other friends came to visit, and I agreed with Callie when she said, "There is no way Erika will stay and watch her boyfriend leave." She is attached to him, and missed him dearly since the season started, even though they met only two months before.

Erika said she has been feeling depressed while in DC and she does not like living in the past, when she had depression issues. Ian's visit reminded her of how much she missed him, which triggered her to badly want to leave and go live with him. I have stopped trying to figure out what is going on with Erika.

Meanwhile, Andrew has parlayed an internship at the Washington Post into an opportunity to have one of his political cartoons published for the famed newspaper. Andrew visited the White House, which Mike was extremely jealous of, and was granted access to one of President Obama's briefings. Andrew described himself as not very politically savvy, making for some awkward moments, but that's the norm for him.

Andrew was supposed to have a cartoon ready a few days later, but missed the deadline by over 24 hours. Luckily, he has a superb imagination and came up with a brilliant cartoon comparing the national debt to evil monsters, which was nationally run in the Post. Great job, kid.

While Andrew was pursuing his dream, Erika was ignoring hers, making excuses and wanting to leave DC. Erika did not reach her goal of joining a band and said it was impossible to find a band in a city like DC. Huh?

It was not only the failure to reach that specific goal, but Erika has been complaining about the Real World culture since moving in. She finally built up the courage and made a decision to leave, but her boyfriend encouraged her to stick it out. Erika had already packed up her belongings and told her roommates she was leaving, but then changed her mind again.

Ashley had enough and stormed off while Callie and Emily both told Erika they are sick of her negative attitude and want her to stay, but also want her to follow her heart, which told her to leave.

Erika was sick of all the dramatics of living on the Real World, but it was mainly her causing all the fireworks. The roommates would probably tell you otherwise, but most of them are happy her negative energy is gone.
