American Idol Season 9

By Lindsay Strouse

It’s ladies’ night on American Idol, with the Top 12 girls kicking off the performances this week. Nerves are clearly running high with the women with all the rumors of a predicted female winner. For the next 3 weeks, the girls and guys will perform on two separate nights, giving America 3 whole days of American Idol a week.

The contestants are singing selections from the billboard charts which allows for a wide range of choices. Here’s how the night went:

Paige Miles -“It’s Alright Now” by Free
Paige is a very likeable girl and can easily relay that on the stage. She has a very confident demeanor and has a certain edge to her. Simon makes a comment saying she has the best voice out of all the girls but she made a bad song choice. True, it is a generic song, but the girl rocked it. I give her a thumbs up…not 2 thumbs up…but still a big thumbs up.

Ashley Rodriguez – “Happy” by Leona Lewis
I’ve been a fan of Ashley since Hollywood and was expecting something really great for the first night. I won’t lie, I was a little disappointed. She seems to be pigeon-holing herself into the category of big pop singers that no one can ever match up to on the show. The judges agree she needs to expand her style and take more of a risk. All in all, they were left slightly unimpressed.

Janell Wheeler – “What About Love?” by Heart
I couldn’t help feeling bad for the girl as I heard her voice shake onstage. It was visibly apparent that she was nervous and it was getting the better of her. She definitely has a very unique voice, but you couldn’t really hear it with the song choice. The song almost overpowered her and her voice. Randy gives her, and all the other contestants, advice to pick a song where you won’t be compared to the original artist because of similarity.

Lilly Scott – “Fix It All” by The Beatles
Lilly Scott is my absolute favorite…possibly my favorite girl out of all the females over the seasons. Clad with her guitar, she makes a great first impression. Simon says he doesn’t see any star power in her yet, but I have to disagree. She has a lot of soul and doesn’t need anything flashy to add to it. She is a true indie artist and I believe she will have success no matter what happens in the show.

Katelyn Epperly – “Oh! Darling” by The Beatles
I love this song and she certainly did it right (at least in my opinion). She looked adorable on the stage with an 80’s-like look going on, perm and all. The arrangement of the song was very well done and definitely showed off her incredible pipes. Simon thought it was messy all over, but I have to disagree with that one. Kara didn’t like Katelyn’s makeover and says she should just go back to being natural. I think someone’s just jealous.

Haeley Vaughn – “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by The Beatles
Haeley is the cutest thing around and just so sincere. She starts off really strong and switches the song up a lot which made the performance really interesting. The raw talent in this girl is crazy. Apparently there were some problems technically, but I didn’t notice, and honestly, I don’t really care. She has one of the best voices out there and has such a versatile style. I was extremely shocked when Simon blurted out that it neared terrible and was “a complete and utter mess.” I don’t know what he was listening to, but it certainly wasn’t Haeley Vaughn.

Lacey Brown – “Landside” by Fleetwood Mac
Lacey is an idol veteran who is more than happy to finally have her time in the spotlight. She’s a very sweet, beautiful girl with an interesting voice and flare about her. While she is a memorable person, she did not have a very memorable performance. It was pitchy throughout the whole song, but the judges make note that they know she is better than that. Simon was a little too harsh with her if you ask me and I really hope she gets the opportunity to stick around.

Michelle Delamor – “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys
It’s always a risk to singing an Alicia song, but I did like her rendition. She doesn’t have much stage presence, but she did sing it really well. A little bit too much like the original version, though. She acts very professional onstage which makes her lack originality and anything that will make her memorable. She has a good enough voice to take some risks and I really hope she takes advantage of that.

Didi Benami – “The Way I am” by Ingrid Michaelson
This was a very simple yet refreshing performance. She seems a little bit awkward onstage and doesn’t know how to really command a presence yet. However, I love her style and type of voice. The type of voice comes into question when Simon makes a good point of mentioning that a lot of the girls tonight are trying to sound like artists such as Adele and Duffy and are beginning to all sound the same. What it comes down to with Didi is she is a pretty girl with a great voice who has found her “star power” just yet.

Siobham Magnus – “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak
This glassblower from Cape Cod is the dark horse of the competition. I won’t lie, she is a little strange onstage but does seem confident in her vocals. I personally didn’t like it, but the judges did. Kara and Ellen really liked her individuality. I’m interested to see where Siobham’s Idol journey will take her.

Crystal Bowersox – “Hand in My Pocket” by Alanis Morissette
What I love about this girl is that she is nothing but herself. She comes to the stage with her guitar and harmonica and just sings with no antics attached. The song fit her style perfectly although I agree with the judges that I would like to see her singing more original songs to show off her unique style. She’s in it to win it for her son’s future and I wish her luck on that.

Katie Stevens – “Feelin’ Good” by Michael Buble
I refuse to believe that this girl is 17. She. Can. SING. I think it was a great way to close the show. However, the song is a bit too conservative and mature for her, and Ellen points out that she would like to see her just be 17 and enjoy herself out there. Can’t disagree on that. I gotta add, it’s pretty exciting having a girl from my home state in the Top 24! Go Connecticut!

Don’t miss the Top 12 male performances tomorrow night on American Idol, Wednesday, February 24, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
