Noelle Marsh from So You Think You Can Dance Season 6

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, on the live results episode of So You Think You Can Dance, it seemed that anyone could be going home.  With a strong Top 10, most of whom gave standout performances the night before, no one seemed to feel safe.  Nathan, Ryan, Kathryn, and Noelle landed in the bottom four and danced a solo, perhaps for the last time, to show America what they could do.  Ultimately, Noelle and Nathan pulled the last amount of votes and were sent home.  Today, Noelle spoke to reporters in a press conference call about her experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When you initially found out that Russell was your partner, considering he’s so far out of your style of dance, were you nervous at all?
A. Noelle: I was actually really excited that he was completely the opposite of me.  I didn’t want anyone who did contemporary.  I think it helped as far as getting hip hop and Russell has also done ballroom before.  To have someone experienced like that was great.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
It was definitely sad to see you go last night but you must be happy that you’ve made the tour and get to dance for your fans across the country.
A. Noelle: Yes!  That was the main goal for me.  I just wanted to be able to make Top 10.  It’s so hard to leave behind the friends you make.  To have the comfort that I’m gonna spend 3 months with them and share my love for dance with America on the tour - that’s what’s most important for me.  It wasn’t about making the finale.  I just never wanted to stop dancing.

Q. You and Mollee formed a friendship right away in Vegas.  Why did you two click so well?
A. Noelle: When Mollee and I first met in Vegas, we didn’t know each other at all but we were roommates so we just clicked right away.  We were both so energetic and bubbly.  It was like a match made in heaven.  There was a two month period The Green Mile, before we found out if we made Top 20.  I flew out and basically lived with her until we found out if we made the show.  Throughout the show, we’ve remained best friends.

Q. How did you find such a great dance studio, living in a small town?
A. Noelle: That was what was the hardest part about dancing in a small town.  I was constantly driving to get the training I needed.  I was driving an hour to get to the dance studio so two hours in the car back and forth every day.

Q. When you first started the competition, you had an injury.  What was going through your head?
A. Noelle: That was definitely the lowest point in my journey.  For that slight moment, I was almost taken out of the competition but I think it pushed me that much harder to come back and lay it all out there.  It gave me a lot more to work for than the other contestants because I was a week behind everyone else.

Q. What were your thoughts when you pulled Afro Jazz out of the hat with Russell?
A. Noelle: I was so confused when I pulled it out.  Russell and I had no clue what to expect.  Going into that, and having to set the standard for Afro Jazz, we were kind of stressed out.  I think it was my favorite piece of the season and I’m so glad we got to expose that genre on the show.  I think it was a breakthrough moment for our partnership.

Q. You’re so bubbly and energetic in life but the judges felt that your personality wasn’t coming through in your dance until recently.  What are your thoughts on that?
A. Noelle: I tried to do the best I could.  I got up there every week and I wasn’t really ever nervous.  I was just excited and anxious to dance for everyone.  Maybe being with such a star partner… I was with Russell the whole time.  Russell is such an amazing dancer.  Maybe that was a setback but I’m so thankful I got to dance with him.

Q. Can you talk about changing partners from Russell to Ryan?
A. Noelle: It definitely brought out a different side of me.  Ryan and  I definitely clicked and we worked really well together.  I think, with each partnership, there’s a different side of you that does get brought out.

Q. How did it feel to dance with Ryan, knowing his wife was watching you?
A. Noelle: I was so nervous to do the hip hop routine because it was so smoky and hot!  I was like, “Oh man, what’s Ashleigh going to think of this?” but we’re all so close.  I love Ashleigh and Ryan.  They’re supportive of each other so it wasn’t too awkward.

Q. You got such great feedback from the judges so were you surprised that you ended up getting eliminated?
A. Noelle: I was upset but I think that everything happens for a reason and I was just so glad to have made it that far.  Maybe I just started to expose myself a little too late in the competition.  This is America’s Favorite Dancer so I’m just excited for everyone who made it on to the next round.

Q. Is there anyone that you learned the most from this season?
A. Noelle: I definitely learned a lot from everyone.  I can’t really pinpoint one person because even the people I didn’t work with.  We all share such a bond and a relationship, that I feel like everyone helped each other to grow.  We’re constantly working with each other behind the scenes.  Everyone brought out a piece of me that I never knew I had.

Be sure to tune in when the Top 8 take the stage on So You Think You Can Dance, Tuesday night at 8pm ET on FOX.
