Flight Time and Big Easy from The Amazing Race 15

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, on The Amazing Race, a Roadblock in Prague proved to be challenging for the Globetrotters.  Big Easy had to answer as many phones in a museum as possible, but only five would have a voice on the other end of the line.  With the five letters given to him by the people on the other end of the line, he had to spell the name “Franz” but couldn’t figure it out.  He ended up giving up and taking a four hour penalty, which ultimately cost his team the race.  Today, Flight Time and Big Easy spoke to RealityWanted about their experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
What made you decide to do The Amazing Race this season?
A. Flight Time: Last year, at training camp, the people from our main office came to us with a questionnaire asking what reality shows we’d ever want to be on.  The Amazing Race is something I always watched and Big Easy did, too.  They pitched the idea to them and fortunately for us, we got selected after going through the same process as everyone else.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Which country was the toughest, when it came to the language barrier?
A. Flight Time: You’d be surprised after traveling around the world how many people speak and understand English.  I’ve been to about 65-70 countries and a lot of people understand English.  There’s a lot of American television out there.  I don’t think the communication barrier was so bad.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
When did the rivalry with Sam and Dan start?  Did it surprise you when you watched the episodes, to see how badly they wanted you gone
A. Flight Time: Big Easy and I … we didn’t know there was a rivalry .  We had no idea that they wanted us to be gone.  We didn’t take it personally.  W e took it as a sign that the race would be easier for them if we weren‘t there.  It wasn’t until the fifth episode or so in Dubai that we realized that the teams feared us.  They were saying it was nice to see the Globetrotters struggle.  That rivalry was made on tv, though.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
You had that confrontation with Mika and Canaan on the water slide.  Do you regret anything you said or was it all just in the spirit of competition?
A. Big Easy: That’s exactly what it was.  We’re professional athletes.  When you play in sports, you always try to get into your opponent’s mind.  When you look back on it, I didn’t say anything mean to her.  I just said, “Don’t do it.”  I didn’t do what Canaan did, which was physically try to push her or call her names.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
In this last challenge with the telephones and the spelling of the name, why did you take the four hour penalty instead of continuing to work at it?
A. Big Easy: Initially, I thought I would’ve figured it out but I was at it for three and a half hours.  All the other teams had gone.  I figured I’d take the penalty.  I didn’t want Flight Time sitting out there in the cold.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
If Sam and Dan, or another team had helped you out, and given you the answer or a hint, do you think that you would’ve still been in the race?
A. Big Easy: It’s a game.  You never know what could happen.  He wasn’t obligated to give me the word.  I should’ve figured the word out on my own.  It’s not about any other team or what they would’ve done.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did you form friendships with the other teams, people that you’ll talk to outside of the race?
A. Flight Time: We became friends with pretty much everybody - definitely the teams that were on the race longer because we had more time to spend with them.  We look forward to the opportunity to see them again.

Q. Gina, RealtyWanted: Are you two back with the Globetrotters and on tour?
A. Flight Time: Actually, we start our domestic tour the day after Christmas.  We’ll be touring up until May 2nd.  We’ll get the opportunity to meet all our fans who supported us during the race.
