This was not the first AGT4 show with New York auditions included, but last night it was NYC exclusively. There was a wide range of acts, but most of the bizarre ones had been presented previously. With one exception that I will cover at the end, the judges were pretty much as expected.

I will start this week with the acts not going forward:
Jeffrey Widom - 38 yom; expectations were high but when he started singing "Mr. lava lava" it was all over for him very quickly

Alex Feldman, 39 yom, dance professional

Dorothy Bishop 38 yof, opera singer, she announced the intention to sing one of Carmen's arias, but wshe went off on a tangent and got the hook before that

Chris Evans, 21 yom body contortionist

David Glass - singer with little talent

The Badd Girls - ages 21 to 26 pop group of 3. Nick says "the Badd Girls are not bound for Vegas." Piers says they "have as much chance of being the next Spice Girls as I have of being the President of the United States – zero."

Next we have the better acts moving ahead:
Tony Ferrante 74 yom, dancer who Sharon characterizes very positively. There is a split vote on this, David and Sharon voting yes and Piers asking if Tony is a million dollar talent. He answers that NO!, but Tony is going to Vegas with two positive votes. He won't get far there.

Tallan Noble Latz - 9 yom plays a mean guitar in a style like his idol Jimi Hendrix. I found it very impressive. Piers said "extraordinary".

Arthur Gulkorov - 30 yom whose Indian-style dances were very high-energy and entertaining.

Nathaniel Burton - 35 yom magician; he has talent and is going to Las Vegas to prove how much versus other magicians (if AGT producers have half a brain they will set it up that way).

African High Flyers - 7 men ages 29 to 35 who were acrobats doing a variety of multi-person stunts including a human pyramid. I like them and so did the judges.

Kelli Glover - female singer was a reject from American Idol 1. She has an overly wide vibrato, which I hate. The judges, especially Sharon and David despite a long career singing in Germany, do not seem to grasp the significance of wide vibrato an inability to center the note with a tight range. They liked her and we will see her in Las Vegas. Like the over 80% of performers who go there, she will not advance to the round of 20.

Platt Brothers - 3 brothers (named Cy, Cheetah and Boone) dancing and doing acrobatics, including doing  several 2-man linked tumbles in rotation. They were great fun and will do well.

Spiritual Harmonizers -  8 male singers age 21 to 76 with 7 of them doing decent harmony  a cappella but nothing to get excited about; the 8th man is the lead singer and he is controversial. One of the judges likened him to a young "Stevie Wonder". David says "awesome". Piers thought he was fabulous. He does have a clear and strong voice. However, I liken him to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, neither of whom approaches a solo without wanting to throw in many flourishes with extraneous notes. This lead singer has the same problem. Some people, particularly those grounded in gospel music, find this positive. For me it is a supremely negative experience to hear this style of singing. I grade the great singers on how they sing the National Anthem. If they add any personal touches, which most do, I dislike it intensely. That same philosophy applied here leads to conclude that this is a good singing group whose progress will be hindered by the vocal antics of their lead singer.

Tallan Noble Latz is the winner in this group. It is possible that Nathaniel Burton will prove to be the most entertaining of the magicians. Arthur Gulkurov and the Platt Brothers could do well; the jury is not in for that yet.
