The Fashion Show

On tonight’s episode of The Fashion Show, the remaining designers head to the design studio to compete in the next mini challenge.  Judge Laura Brown speaks about up and coming designers who have gone on to design outfits for Michelle Obama and other important political figures.  This challenge will ask the contestants to the same… just on a smaller scale.  They’ll be designing a graphic t-shirt for a high school student named Giuliana, who’s running for student body president.  The winner gets immunity and there are certainly some peeps in the crowd that could use it!

As the designers work, their high school pictures are shown and I can’t help but chuckle at a few of them.  Each contestant has a backup full of materials to work with, depicting a different social circle in high school from cheerleaders to goths.  Daniella pulls off another win, with her tree hugging design and she’s starting to seem like an unstoppable force in this competition.

Isaac throws the designers for a loop when he asks them to create an outfit based on the teen clique they chose for the mini challenge.  The outfit will be for a young 20-something but the tough part about this elimination challenge is that they’ll only have one day to complete their outfit.  So much for sleep.  Grab some Red Bull and some Pixi Stix and get to work, people!

Part of the problem in this challenge is that some of the designers don’t even understand their cliques.  Merlin was assigned mean girls but never saw the movie associated with the idea of that look, while Angel has no clue was a b-girl is.  Lord help them!  Still, after looking at all of the designs, Isaac and Kelly have faith that Merlin can pull off something fabulous if he finishes his outfit right.

At the fashion show, there aren’t many outfits that impress me and I think a lot of it can be chalked up to the fact that they were given very little time to work.  Still, Lidia, Haven, and Angel stand out to me.  I especially love Daniella’s tree hugging outfit!  In panel, the two best designs, according to the audience, went to Haven and Merlin.  A majority of the audience said that they would buy Merlin’s outfit while an audience member called her outfit a “killer design”.  Merlin is named the winner after all his crying and angsting over whether or not he was on the mark with his outfit.

Angel and Johnny land in the bottom two and Kelly rips Angel for completely missing the mark on her b-girl look.  Johnny doesn’t escape unscathed either.  His outfit was called cheap and hideous by audience members.  Ouch.  While the judges deliberate, Reco goes off in the waiting room because he doesn’t feel that Haven deserved to be in the top two.  Daniella tries to jump in to back Haven up but that just fuels Reco’s fire more.  Things settle down just in time for the judges to hand down their decision.  Angel is eliminated for claiming not to know anything about hip hop, something that is so pervasive in our culture.  She promises to take what she learned here and apply it back in her professional career.
