Ghost Hunters

Essex County Hospital – Cedar Grove, N.J.

Another trip through an abandoned mental hospital is right up the alley of any fans of “Ghost Hunters.”  Although just out of commission since 2007, the multiple buildings which occupy the grounds of the Hospital look like they’ve been forgotten by father time for years.  TAPS will be the most likely be the last investigators to roam the halls because all the buildings will soon be torn down and the 365 acres of land will be turned into a park.  There’s always some horrifying stories that accompany any mental hospital and the Essex County Hospital was no different.  One patient peeled his face apart piece by piece, while another ate his entire bed.  Please consult your doctor before going on the “bed” diet.  10,000 people were believed to have died on the premises and you have to expect that some of those tortured souls were probably sticking around.  Besides various noises such as screams and whispers a “ghost nurse” has been seen walking through the corridors.

It wasn’t long into the investigation until the entire team began experiencing elevated heat signatures and random noises. Joe Chin and Britt Griffith, in from California to help out with the investigation and score his 15 minutes of fame, began hearing noises, followed by a deathly moan and then shortly thereafter, a black shadow crossed their path down a hallway.  Dave Tango, Steve Gonsalves, and even us the viewer, got the treat of hearing some load noises and no one else was in the building they were investigating.  Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson encountered a woman’s voice, possibly that of the ghost nurse trying to make contact with them as she had done with the caretakers.  Not long after hearing the woman’s voice, more loud audible noises began coming from the attic, but nothing was stirring, not even a mouse.  Certainly some of the noises of the night could be explained by a random rodent looking for a late night snack but a lot of these noises did sound like someone walking around.  Dave and Steve took the dare of all dares and decided to be pushed and locked into the “body freezer” in the morgue hoping to stir up the echoes.  Although nothing came of this as part of a personal experience during this test, maybe the mics picked something up.

Everyone in TAPS agreed that this was one of the more active investigations when it came to personal experiences, but as usual, personal experiences have to be backed up by audio or visual evidence.  Because so many of the noises were caught on tape, the team had more than a few items to share with the client.  The best “white noise” was caught on tape during the time Dave and Steve were locked in the body fridge saying “He’s here.”  The final piece of evidence showed a camera, which was on a tri-pod, being lifted and then dropped on the ground.  Can’t remember any other time when this happened during a investigation.  TAPS called the hospital haunted and hopefully they can go back and investigate one more time before the buildings are leveled.
