The Celebrity Apprentice

By David McAlpine

Last time on The Celebrity Apprentice 2, Dennis Rodman stepped up as Project Manager and led KOTU to another brilliant loss, allowing the team to crash and burn. On the heels of his second meltdown, Donald Trump finally took some initiative and fired Dennis on the spot, narrowing the field to 11.

No one seems to be shocked when Dennis doesn't return, but the men quickly realize they're fighting a losing battle, outnumbered 7 to 4. Herschel manages to stay optimistic, hoping that the men can pull off a win without Dennis dragging the team down.

Insert feel good moment here, where Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins gets to give her check for $20,000 to the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia. SInce she's the national spokesperson for the awareness of sickle cell disease, who better than to get the money?

Just as the next task is about to begin, Trump (i.e. The Celebrity Apprentice producers) decides to switch up the teams. The new KOTU consists of Herschel Walker, Clint Black, Natalie Gulbis, Joan Rivers and Khloe Kardashian. Athena is left with Tionne Watkins, Brande Roderick, Annie Duke, Melissa Rivers and Jesse James. Hm, not contrived...no, not at all. Brian McKnight was left out, since he was on "celebrity duty" at a concert, so his spot would be decided later.

Each team is given the challenge of designing and producing a 60-second "viral video" for All Small and Mighty detergent. The team that has the most original, "buzzworthy" video that the executives feel best represents the brand of All wins $20,000 for the Project Manager's charity. On Athena, the producer of the group, Melissa, steps up, while Clint Black takes the head spot for KOTU.

Jesse starts off Athena's brainstorming session about Brande being a biker's wife (he only wishes), while Annie tosses out the idea of Jesse being washed by midgets, representing the detergent. I never thought I could be more shocked with the ideas that were ever thrown out on this show, but this surpasses everything I've seen before. KOTU takes it to the same level, with Clint insinuating he wants to make their video faux-dirty.

KOTU's plan is quickly shot down at their meeting with the executives, who make it clear that sex does not cut it for selling their brand. Despite Natalie and Khloe warning against using the idea and Joan throwing out ideas left and right, Clint sticks with his semi-porn idea. I thought that was a bad decision until Athena starts pressuring Jesse let the midgets bathe him, which he agrees to. Wow. Back to KOTU, where the women are desperately trying to put the brakes on Clint's idea, but he charges ahead, insistent that his idea is the winner.

The actors begin to show up for the shoots, and a couple Oompa Loompa jokes are thrown around on Athena's side. Clint doesn't like the actor that they hired, so he lets him go. I can already tell this is shaping up to be a fantastic end result for both teams.

As if his idea for the whole video weren't great enough, Clint decides that he'll be the main actor in the video (since he's such a big celebrity and all), pissing off all the women on KOTU. Joan curses him out and takes a nap, while Khloe and Natalie sit off to the side. Athena doesn't seem to be making much more progress when one of the little actors complains about the Oompa Loompa inspiration for his outfit, which Athena skillfully ignores. Filming begins and the video doesn't seem to be getting any better.

A day passes, and now it's onto the editing, where things really take a turn for the worse. Herschel suggests that they add bubbles to KOTU's video (since, you know, they have little to no dialogue...how viral), but Clint disagrees. He then locks his team out of the editing room--how professional. Athena starts to love their video, no matter how offensive or nonsensical it is. Melissa and Brande show each other some team love, while Joan tells Clint how it is.

Both the All executives are incredibly unimpressed with the videos (as would a good portion of the American viewing public), so Trump calls in the next best person...Perez Hilton? Perez also doesn't like KOTU's, but he finds positive things to say about Athena's video.

Tension starts to build in the boardroom between Clint and the rest of his team when they start to explain how he took over for the task. Natalie even points out that the executives didn't like the riskiness of the content in their video, giving Clint a big strike. Joan adds her own two cents, and Melissa, who is on the other team now, tries to preface her mother's spiel, saying she can be hard to deal with (yeah, tell us something we DON'T know). Trump and Trump, Jr. then try to poke fun at Melissa, insinuating the obnoxiousness of her and her mother.

KOTU's and Athena's videos are screened for the boardroom and everyone is appalled at KOTU's final product. Khloe and Natalie find Athena's to be genuinely funny, which seems to make Athena the winner. But, since the producers liked neither, both teams lose and two people are going to be fired. Melissa takes Tionne in (since she volunteered) and Brande, while Clint takes Khloe and Natalie, sidestepping Joan's opportunity to rip him a new one. Strange considering I thought he'd for sure take her in, but probably smart on his part.

Athena comes under fire first, where Melissa can't seem to come up with a definitive answer for why they lost. Tionne and Brande can't, either, so Trump makes the decision for himself: Tionne gets the axe because she volunteers to come into the boardroom (á la Bradford, season 2). Wait, what? So mysteriously Tionne has a pact with Melissa to come into the boardroom, then Trump up and fires her.

On KOTU, Natalie makes it clear she wants to stay, even though she's missing a big golf tournament in Asia. Donald then turns to Khloe and asks her where she went last week, when we find out she flew to Los Angeles to fulfill a court ordered appearance for her DUI. Donald brings up that he had no idea that she had a DUI and that he lost some respect for her (as if he has any respect for any of these celebrities?). Since he "hates" people who drive under the influence, Khloe gets fired, too, but he gives her $20,000 more towards her charity since "they shouldn't have to suffer for her mistake." Wow, Trump, way too harsh. I mean, she's clearly taken steps to clear it up and right her wrongs, and you're going to embarrass her on national television? Very unclassy.

So, just to clarify, Melissa and Clint make two unexpected decisions (Tionne and Khloe) and they both get fired rather than the Project Managers, both of whom should have been fired, but probably create ratings. Huh, that doesn't sound planned in the least. Maybe I'm just bitter about my favorite, Khloe, getting booted, but this was a really upsetting and completely bogus elimination. I mean really, Trump, totally unneccessary.

The Celebrity Apprentice 2 airs Sundays on NBC at 9/8c.
