Dancing with The Stars

By Mary Cavaliere

This week DWTS introduced two new dances, the Argentine Tango, which involves a lot of passion and sensuality, and the Lindy-Hop which is high-energy, fun, and a lot of kicking!  The competition was more intense this week because there will be two eliminations tomorrow night which puts even more pressure on everyone.

Here are my thoughts on tonight’s performances:

David & Kym tackled the Lindy-Hop this week.  I smiled all the way through it and felt that David did way better than what the judges thought. I would have given him an 8 or a 9.  Judges Score = 22

Lil’ Kim & Derek danced the Argentine Tango.  I agree with Bruno……it was brilliant choreography.  I don’t particularly like Lil’ Kim (I think she’s a bit conceited) but I have to give her credit where credit is due.  She did a great job with this dance.  Judges Score = 27

Chuck & Julianne tackled the Lindy-Hop. It had great energy but they were not always in sync.  This was one of the few times I was disappointed with Julianne’s choreography. Judges Score = 22

Lawrence & Edyta danced the Argentine Tango.  I hated the music (but that’s not their fault).  I also didn’t care for the choreography because it was all about Edyta and Lawrence didn’t seem to be included. I felt Lawrence did the best he could with what he was given.  Judges Score = 19

Ty & Chelsie tackled the Lindy-Hop.  I thought Ty did a good job in spite of the fact that his technique needs work. Chelsie received a lot of kudos from the judges and that made me smile because I want the show to keep her around.  Judges Score = 25

Steve & Karina danced the Argentine Tango.  Essentially it was just Karina dancing alone and Steve was there as filler only.  He’s cute, he’s cuddly, but he’s gotta go.  I don’t think, however, that Bruno needed to be so harsh in his judgment.  I forgot to write down Steve & Karina’s score, but I know it had to be pretty low based on the feedback he received.

Melissa & Tony tackled the Lindy-Hop and it was, as usual, excellent all the way around.  I believe Melissa is the one to beat this season, and I think the judges will agree because she and Tony were only one point off for a perfect score!  Judges Score = 29

Holly & Dmitry danced the Argentine Tango.  There were a lot of mistakes in the beginning and it seemed really safe until the first flip and then it got a little better.  But the judges once again weren’t pleased with this week’s effort.  Judges Score = 16

Steve-O & Lacey tackled the Lindy-Hop (sort of) and my heart went out to Lacey because it truly was one of the most awkward dances I’ve ever watched on this show.  I thought the judges were generous in giving Steve a 5.  Judges Score = 15

Gilles & Cheryl danced the Argentine Tango and it couldn’t have been any hotter!  Gilles reminds me of a younger Antonio Banderas who I had the pleasure of seeing on Broadway about six years ago.  I agree with Gilles that Cheryl creates magic on the dance floor, but without the right partner, she can only do so much.  This couple is lethal, and they were awarded the first perfect score of the season!  Judges Score = 30

Shawn & Mark tackled the Lindy-Hop.  Shawn was definitely comfortable with all the jumping and flipping, but to me it seemed she was out of sync a lot and so it looked awkward at times. Judges score = 25

At the top of the leader board is Gilles & Cheryl (30), Melissa & Tony (29), and for the first time Lil’ Kim & Derek (27).  The couples at risk are:  Steve & Karina (?), Steve & Lacey (15), and Holly & Dmitri (16).  My favorites continue to be Melissa & Tony and Gilles & Cheryl, and at this point, I honestly don’t know if there are any other contenders for the title.
