So You Think You Can Dance - Season 4 Opener

so you think you can dance

By: Mary Cavaliere

This is one reality series I have not watched from the beginning.  When it premiered I thought it was just a bunch of young kids doing hip-hop dancing and that held no interest for me as an older woman.  But towards the end of the second season an episode caught my eye and I started watching.  Now I love the show as much as Dancing With The Stars and won’t miss an episode!

One of the things I didn’t realize when I initially chose not to watch it was that it extended to many forms of dance.  One style they feature often, that we will never see on Dancing With The Stars is contemporary.  That form of dance is truly a way for these young kids to express themselves so I am definitely into it.

Although I had no vested interest in the outcome during Season 2, I was happy for Benji when he won.  I watched the entire Season 3 and was rooting for Sabra from the beginning.  This young lady had so much talent with only a very small amount of dance training.  What an inspiration she was to young people watching!

The show is aired on Fox and is produced by Simon Fuller.  Yes, that’s the same guy who produces American Idol.  One of the two main judges, Nigel Lythgoe is also a producer on American Idol.  Mary Murphy, the other main judge, is a ballroom dance champion and choreographer.  Every week there is usually a guest judge, which happens to be one of the choreographers they use during the season.  My favorite is Mia Michaels.  Not only is she one of the most brilliant choreographers I’ve ever seen, she is filled with an enormous amount of human compassion for others that we don’t normally see in the entertainment industry.  The show is hosted by Cat Deeley who appears not only to be loved by the audience, but by all the dancers as well.

The first episode featured auditions in Los Angeles.  Mia Michaels happened to be the guest judge this week.  The most memorable individual who auditioned was Jonathon from Italy, who didn’t make it through.  I don’t know if I’ve every seen a young person filled with so much arrogance.  I’m sure there is some family history there that has created such a narcissistic monster, but it was truly sad to watch.  As good-looking as he was, he’s the kind of person who turns others off right from the get-go.  Looks like the judges were turned off as well.

Obviously, as with Idol’s auditions, it is difficult to watch people who can’t dance try out, and some get a little perturbed when they don’t make it through to Vegas.  But the dumbest remark of the night came from one of these contestants.  Her defense for not making it through was  “They’re racist against tall people.”   Since when did height become a race?????
